I had a reply written last night but a pop-up killed it I agree with those examples. But I am finding that american cars built well and designed well are often the exception, not the rule. For example, they don't build them like they used to. My father has a 1972 Cutlass 442 which went 325,000 miles on the original motor before a rebuild. Basically I'm saying you'd be hard pressed to find anything from the US made in the 80's or even early to mid 90's worth its weight in salt. Lately they have caught on. GM created Saturn to compete with the import market, Ford set its reliability goals after Toyota and Chrysler went through a restructuring. But there is still a lot of ground to be covered. This is like the battle I got into with my friends and family when I told them I bought a used 1991 300ZX Twin Turbo with 60,000 miles on it for 17 grand. They thought I was nuts and should have bought new. One drive, the shock on their faces after experiencing the performance, and after ward on the walk around, noting the flawless condition of the car, left them speachless. Then I would ask "What could I have bought new for 17,000???" No response. So what could he get for his money from a US company: Lesser statistical quality, less of a warranty amongst other things. I can sleep easy at night owning an import car knowing that Nissan, Honda and Toyota have manufacturing AND design plants here in the US, and every time I buy parts for my cars, I'm paying an American worker who is shipping/delivering/giving them to me.
